Youth Ambassador Program

The OC Next Act Youth Ambassador Program (YAP) was established in March 2024 during the Lion King Jr. musical theatre production under the leadership of Founder, Nica Kelly, and Organizer, Raina Czapski. This student leadership initiative was created to elevate young performers not only in their artistic development, but also in their personal character, conduct, and community engagement.

The committee is composed of dedicated student leaders in grades 6–12 who serve as representatives of OC Next Act both on and off the stage. Its mission is to cultivate performers who demonstrate respect, attentiveness, kindness, and responsible leadership. Members exemplify the values of the program while fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for peers.

Through the Youth Ambassador Program, students actively contribute to the growth and success of OC Next Act by:

  • Assisting in rehearsals and mentoring fellow performers
  • Planning outreach and advocacy initiatives
  • Participating in fundraising efforts and community service projects
  • Representing the organization at events and performances
  • Promoting teamwork, encouragement, and arts appreciation

YAP members are recognized for consistently modeling the program’s character standards through the prestigious STAR Awards. These awards are proudly showcased at all musical theatre productions, celebrating student leadership and allowing families, patrons, and community partners to see the impact of their efforts.

As the program continues to develop, the Youth Ambassador Committee remains central to OC Next Act’s mission: inspiring confident, compassionate young artists who lead with both creativity and character.

These four pillars provide youth performers with clear expectations and a shared culture of excellence, respect, and joyful creativity. Ambassadors are encouraged to demonstrate STAR values consistently during rehearsals, performances, and volunteer activities.

Program Goals

The STAR Recognition Program aims to:

  • Promote personal responsibility and leadership
  • Build confidence through positive reinforcement
  • Foster collaboration, empathy, and artistic respect
  • Support social-emotional development and peer mentorship
  • Celebrate students who exhibit strong character and community spirit

How STAR Recognition Works

Throughout each production or program session:

  • Teaching artists and peer ambassadors observe and identify STAR behaviors
  • Students may earn verbal recognition and STAR AWARDS.
  • Regular check-ins help track growth in character skills
  • STAR awardees are announced and celebrated at designated milestones
  • Achievements are displayed publicly at productions to honor recipients

Recognitions may highlight one specific STAR pillar or several, based on demonstrated conduct.

Positive Character Traits Linked to STAR

In addition to STAR behaviors, ambassadors may be recognized for traits such as:

Honesty • Integrity • Perseverance • Optimism • Curiosity • Empathy • Gratitude
Self-discipline • Creativity • Responsibility • Flexibility • Adaptability
Accountability • Respect

These traits align with YAP leadership standards and help students connect character to real-life skills.

Recognition Opportunities

STAR achievements may be acknowledged through:

  • Certificate Awards
  • Display boards at events
  • Spotlight features in programs or newsletters
  • Letters of recommendation noting leadership qualities
  • Eligibility for future ambassador roles

This layered recognition ensures that students receive validated encouragement that supports ongoing growth.

Impact

The STAR Recognition Program strengthens the OC Next Act community by ensuring that every participant feels valued, supported, and empowered. Students learn that being a great performer extends beyond talent; it requires kindness, engagement, cooperation, and authenticity.
